Analyze a scenario with the card reading

Analyser un scénario avec la fiche de lecture

The reading logs

The sheet what is it… ?

You know, to succeed in writing your story, your scenario, is a joy, sometimes a pain, but above all , it is a battle against yourself and reach the end, write the word end is a great victory.

But this is not the ultimate goal ! If it is to write a scenario for it to remain at home, in the warm, it is useless. The purpose of a scenario is that it becomes : image, this to be for a long, a short, a-series etc…but it is necessary thatit is transformed.

To succeed in this tour de force he must jump, and throw themselves into the water and send it to you. But to who ? A producer ? A string ? A commission ? But once you’ve done that happens ? Well it’s simple. From the moment the person will get your scenario, you will be judged !

Then, even if writing your story is an adventure and a fight exciting, it’s going to take, from now on, that you take into account that you will be judged.

Often when a project arrives at a producer, or the CNC, a “brigade” of players will start and it will be difficult to deal with. For this, it has the ultimate weapon : The card-reading.

The what ?

The card reading ! It is a grid of “rating” which allows you to identify the strong points and the weak points of a scenario. But it allows especially that all readers have the same tool to give an opinion of “common” to the producer to take the decision or not to produce your film. For the CNC , this allows you to go through the various selections and be helped or not, but in this article we’ll talk about the plug used by the TV channels. The analysis of the card-reading ” type CNC “ will be the subject of another article.

And then ?

And then if you don’t know the process and the points on which readers will dwell, how can you think that your scenario has all chances to pass the test of the card-reading ?! That is why in this article I will give you.

How do you prepare ?

Stop thinking that your scenario is at the top ! It may be good…may be good…but it is not at the top. Which means that it can be improved...always. The best thing you can do is to read your scenario by someone who has the habit, but before you send in your scenario you need to think and try to self judge with the same ” tools “ that the readers who will read your scenario.

Each string and commission have cards of their own. But on the whole they are necessarily some points in common :

The logline : or the concept if you want. Is the idea of your scenario can be summarized in a few lines ? If this is not the case…is that your idea, your concept is not clear in your head…and obviously there must be problems in your scenario.

The structure : That is to say how your story is built. I flaps the ears with it : The structure, the hero’s journey, etc…is there a hero, a goal, an enemy, is that there are sub-plots etc…

The pace : The different parts are-although they are “proportionate” ? The beginning is too long or too short ? The second act does he have a soft belly ? etc… Have you removed the parts, or sequences that serve no purpose ? Have you removed the characters useless etc…

The target : To which is written your story ? To what audience ?

The characters : Are they recognizable, characterized, endearing. Do they have a purpose in the story, who is the hero and who are his enemies.

But what is it like ?

The presentation is quite simple. There is the identity card of the project :

The author of the scenario

The director

The production (if there is one)

The kind

The place (where is the film)

The time

Then comes a summary of the plot done by the reader !

And then an array of that type :

Very good Good Average Low
Topic
Construction
Dialogues
Characters
Treatment

Then the player puts the cross in each column to say whether such or such point is low, medium, good or very good.

To be honest a producer or a commission will look at the first table and if all the crosses are mostly in the middle and the low, the producer will not go any further, don’t read the synopsis and the rest of the card-reading.

Then the file can contain other elements :

  • Potential room : Is what the reader thinks your scenario is made for the cinema or, on the contrary, is what your story would be better as a telefilm.
  • TV broadcasting : It is not if your scenario is intended for the tv, but rather which box to your scenario would be the most relevant : Prime Time etc…is there sex, violence, drugs ? etc…
  • Potential chain : what chain ? Or if you have it sent to a string in particular is that your scenario is adapted to this chain and why.
  • General opinion
  • Target audience

Some of these points may be accompanied by a note on 10.

Then based on the cards the reader will be a ” synopsis “, a synthesis of the scenario in general on one or two pages.

And then he will end by an analysis point-by-point will justify its rating that can be found in the table at the beginning of the file.

Obviously the drive will complete its listing by a conclusion.

I will give you again the readings very soon. Of course these readings will be accompanied by a card reading on the model that I just ship to you. But now you can take a step back from your story and start to ” Analyze “ your story according to the points that I have just pointed out.
