Bad advice and blog movies

Mauvais conseils et blog cinéma

How is going on and organize a shoot on the plateau

Or how to learn properly and have good info!!!

Hello to all. I am happy to you find for this first article of 2016. I must admit that I’ve been struggling to find the tone to properly write this article…There are a lot of sites on the web that talk about cinema, writing, achievement. But very few are kept by people who know what they are talking about. All this to say that all advice, even for free, are not always good to take ! Example…

“How to Make A Movie “ exists because I was tired of finding information that is false or beside the plate. Some professionals take their time to write and advise the users, whether they are young or ” middle youth “. In short, to help all those who decide to live their passion or trying to live their passion, who need real info and know the correct ways to do so.

With the right advice, good practice, you can try to apply it to improve your technique whether in achievement or in writing.

But if it tells you anything, not only you are going to plant you…but you will not be taken seriously and may make you replace them severely. “How to make a movie” and the efforts that I am working are there for you to have the good word. Just as Roman’s blog ” learn the cinema “ !

Two readers of CFUF have me arrested, by email, abouta site that offers adviceon writing and directing, as well as ” How to Make A Movie “. So far, nothing to report. I’m even glad that others embark on the adventure and offer even more content, as long as it makes you move forward ;o).

I’m quite proud of these two drives because of their experiences and what they learn on the blog, they have been able to discern the good info from the less good ! I find it incredible and it is again a proof for me that I am not doing all this for nothing ;o)

For you set the story, Lucas, one of the two readers that I have challenged, tells me that the blog in question, beyond writing articles, offers training free videos on “how to make a short film in 30 days”…from the writing to the output (writing, prep, shooting, post-production, broadcast in the 30 days !)

I invite you also to watch the latest video on the channel of “how to write a Movie” to write a scenario quickly ;o) You’ll understand one of the reasons for which I tick ;o)

You can imagine…this is an incredible promise to being able to do a short film in 30 days, from the writing to the distribution. But mostly it is quite difficult to maintain if one wants to have a minimum of quality, that we want to do that as a total amateur or like a pro ! But the promise is so beautiful, Lucas decides to register.

Lucas went very quickly realize that the info is given by someone who has obviously never really turned…why not …but especially that the tips are still very roughs…for the credibility it will return.

As I believe only what I see, rather than go on the blog and I subscribe to the so-called training…and not give any credit to its author, I decided to meet Lucas who lives in Calais (where I had to make a move for the job) so that it shows me what it returns…beyond this beautiful encounter, the videos that he shows me, I confess, make me fall from the top…

Good, bad Blog cinema…All this to say what ?

In one of his videos, the administrator of the blog in question explains how to pass a shooting on a tray and the way of organising… Lucas has commented on the video by pointing out the weaknesses of the advice given. He left a comment under the video of the “training” and I must admit that this response is very well reasoned, almost perfect ;o) .. But I would like here to explain to you how you need to do and provide details for Lucas ;o)

The team of a film is comprised of :

  • a director
  • a chief op/ cameraman
  • assistant camera
  • a sound engineer
  • a boom operator
  • a script
  • a machino
  • an electro
  • a make-up artist
  • a costume designer
  • a real estate manager.

This team is the minimum for a real shooting, in the rules. You can get by with fewer people, see below.

For a light team :

  • A director
  • chief op/ cameraman
  • script
  • assistant director
  • sound engineer/ boom operator
  • make-up artist/ dresser
  • stage manager/ electro/ machino

Already, if you have this configuration here, it is not that bad.

Each member of the team knows already his role ! No need to make a brief to explain who does what. Just becausea shooting is preparing , and that it does not arrive like a hair on the soup of the day ;o) so We did reconnaissance on the premises, and of the meetings of pre-med ;o)

Whether you’re in one or the other of the configurations, the way of proceeding is the same, with a few exceptions, which are more technical and an organizational nature.

The important thing is the preparation : See the sceneries with his assistant and his chief operator, The stage manager is crucial to ensure that the day of the shooting is happening correctly. It defines where it will turn around. The person in charge of the deco knows what she needs to do like change and in what time frame so that everything is ready for the day.

Lucas told me and showed me that in the video the blogger apprentice filmmaker gave a council and a single… to make a count :

  • highlight the costumes
  • and accessories in the scenario…and that’s all !

It is a stupidity without name ! I’ll do an article on the skinning a little. In the meantime you will be able to find an article on the subject in the next issue of ” Cinema magazine “. But be aware that the dépouillement you serves especially to make your plan work beyond the serving lists for props, scenery, machinery etc…

The day of the shooting :

If the shoot is scheduled for Monday at 9AM (this is what we call : ready to shoot (PAT) team will arrive 1 hour before or at 8 hours.

Why ?

This is the time of preparation of the day. This time is there to implement the first plan and the first sequence of the day.

  • The deco has made changes and accommodations the day before
  • The régie will arrive 30 minutes to 1 hour before the arrival time of the team to open the decoration, prepare the table governance (coffee, etc..) that is to say between 7AM and 7: 30am.

I advise you to bring the actors who are concerned by the first sequence at the same time as the team and then bring them to the decor and make an introduction. Let the director explain what will happen. That is to say that he should ask it to “play” the scene. If you are the producer, do not play really, this is not the time. This establishment is just there to see how the scene is going to happen : the travel, etc…This allows the team to see and understand the scene and the potential technical problems. This enables you to see if it works.

Once this is done, send the actors prepare : makeup, dress, hairstyle. During this time the team installs the camera, the light, the sound etc… Take a lining to help the camera operator and the chief operator to make its light. This can be a member of the team, the assistant director for example ;o)

When the team and the actors are ready, sauté the actors on the set and make a mechanical. That is to say, have to repeat the actors in order to see if the movement is planned, the frame and the light are good. Don’t wear yourself out to the actors by asking them to play hard !! It doesn’t, keep their energy for the outlets.

How to put the mechanics in place ?

For the mechanics begins, the wizard setting the scene say : up ! (The team and the actors are being put in place), Silence ! (Everyone is silent), the director says : Action !, the scene will be played and at the end of the sequence the director (you might say) will say : cut !

Once everything is ok, do a rehearsal. With the same ads as above. Once you are satisfied, it will be time to make a first decision. There, the announcement system is different.

How to put the 1st jack in place ?

Here is how to do, who should do it and what it should say :

The first assistant : In place ! (Everyone takes their place)

The first wizard : Silence ! (Everyone is silent)

The first Assistant : a driver !

The sound engineer : his turns ! Or well it turns ! (the sound engineer triggers the recording of the sound)

1 opv (assistant camera) : Camera is running ! (1 opv triggers the recording of the image), and then he said : announcement !

The chef machino or machino has the clap in front of the camera. The boom of the boom operator is placed on the top of the machino.

The machino : 3/1 1st ( 3 = sequence ; 1 = the number of the plan and one (1era) the number of the outlet. Which gives : “3-on-1 first” ; ” 3 on 1 second “, etc…

1 opv (assistant camera) : Clap !

The machino clape, taking care to re-open the clap just after entrechoqué the two parties of the cpmp.

The machino goes out of scope, the pole wraps.

Chief op/ cameraman : framed !

Director : Action !

Then you do a first take, and then a second, etc…in the play the actors until the game and the plan you like

This procedure seems a little long, so-called like that, but once you get mastery, everything goes very fast ;o)

The importance of the cpmp and its roles

You will have understood, the cpmp has an importance of paramount because it will allow us to synchronize the sound and picture if they are saved separately. But in order to shoot low budget and that the sound is directly on the camera, you will serve as the mount to find easily, when derushage, everyplan, and every sequence.

DO CLAPEZ NOT WITH THE HANDS !!! You might find you with hands on all the plans of the footage and you would not find your plans and sequences.

In the case where you have the gear pro, kind a quantar to the sound (that is, the recorder) and a camera pro, they will generate a timecode that will be synchronized on the one and the other. It will therefore be possible in post-production to sync the sound and the image without even the clap , because it will be enough to match the timecode of the footage its the quantar and the rush images from the camera. Please be aware that, in general, it is the sound that provides the timecode reference. The clap you will be used to identify the sequence and the socket for the mounting.

If your team is reduced, if you do not have a camera, learn how to implement these procedures, adapt them according to the number of technicians and equipment. For example, if you do not have assistant director, it is up to you to decide what he should say. If you do not have a machino, ask another member of the team etc…but do it correctly the ads !
