The filmmakers used the Festival

If none of the filmmakers in this year’s competition has already won a Golden Palm during a previous passage on the croisette, many of them are regulars and some have even already had the honors on the List.

This is particularly the case ofAsghar Farhadi, which will present Everybody Knows in the opening of the Festival. His last two films have both been selected in the official competition, respectively, in 2013 and 2016. If the film is not directly walked away with an award, the actress Bérénice Béjo won the best actor prize for The past. The situation is a little similar to that of Stéphane Brizé, since the actor Vincent Lindon had won the prize of interpretation for the law of The market in 2015.

From the top of his 87-year-old Jean-Luc Godard is the “dean” of this competition. Named several times throughout his career, he won the jury prize in 2014 for Goodbye to language. Fourth participation for the filmmaker, the chinese Jia Zhang-Ke, who had won the award for the best screenplay in 2013 for A touch of sin. Fourth, participation also for the japanese, Kore Eda, who had won the jury prize for like father, like son 2013.

For Spike Lee, this will be only the third participation. Early in his career, he had seen his films, Do the right thing and Jungle Fever selected without winning the lesser prize and had rained was in competition at Cannes since. The Italian director Matteo Garrone has had more success. In three participations, he has twice won the Grand prize, for Gomorrah in 2008, and a Reality in 2012.

Lee Chang Dong, former Culture Minister of South Korea, and filmmaker known has already been selected in Competition twice at the Cannes film Festival. He won the award for the best screenplay in 2010 for Poetry.

The French film-maker Christopher Honoré had had the honour of the competition once, in 2007, to The love songs, named but not award winning. At the age of 36 years, the Italian Alice Rohrwacher ‘s the youngest filmmaker in competition, but this is not his first time. She had also won the Grand Prix for his only participation in 2014, for the film The wonders.

The selected filmmakers for the first time

Used to big festivals and several times awarded in Berlin, Venice and even the Cannes selection that is parallel, the Iranian Jafar Panahi, not certain to be authorized to leave the country by the authorities, is selected for the first time in the official competition and could quickly position itself as one of the favorites this year if his new movie is at the height of the previous.

Among the “new faces”, one can also mention the French director Eva Husson, of which this is only the second movie. The lebanese Nadine Labaki had been selected for the un certain regard competition in 2011.

The american David Robert Mitchell had made a sensation at Cannes in 2014 with his second feature film, the horror film It follows, but it was for the critics ‘ week. It is his first selection in competition.

First participation also to Pawel Pawlikowski, . The Polish director 60-year-old has made only four films during his career, which seems to have taken a new turn with Ida, noticed in 2014 and winner of many international awards. The japanese Ryusuke Hamagushi is also selected for the first time. Aged 39, He began in advertising, before getting out with Senses, a prize-winning film at Locarno in 2016.

The Russian Kirill Serebrennikov has made a transition to A certain look in 2016 with The disciple. Finally, the underdog of the competition this year, the one that no one expected, it is the Egyptian A. B. Shawky, whose Yomeddine is simply the first feature-length film. The film has also in part been funded through the Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter !

If one or two directors could join this selection penny little, we can already say that it is quite intriguing and audacious, with 8 “new” on 18. What guarantee, already, some surprises to the List in may next…
