[critical] SHAUN THE SHEEP – THE MOVIE

The

e bet was perilous : to transpose to the long format for the fantasy and creativity permanent in the series SHAUN THE SHEEP (aired on CBBC, 4 seasons already, including Nick Park was the instigator) , without falling into the pitfall of the film with gags clumsy and repetition. 6 minutes, we are so spent at 1.25 am, with a scenario worthy of a feature film classic, far from the mièvreries Disney. Here, we do not take children for quiches ! The incursion of the flock in the city life confronts with intelligence and mischief in the animal world and man, his habits, the noise, the new technologies. Between comic situations or completely flippantes ( the agent of the SPA, the madman, trying to catch his victims to shut them up, the bloodshot eyes ! ), the film alternates wisely the moments of big poilades and breaks more poetic.When Shaun and his flock are tired of their daily monotonous, they decide to take a rest. To be able to buller quietly, they fall asleep nicely for their owner and put to sleep in a caravan. But the caravan passes, breaks, and ends up in the middle of ” the big city “. Sheep, taken remorse, decide to go and get the farmer…

 

On closer inspection, the details to be encouraging for adults abound: the references to Monty Python and The pink Panther (Black Edwards, 1964) passing by a soundtrack of unleashed, or the Silence of The Lambs (!), the entertainment is of every moment. Small, meanwhile, will appreciate the situations outlandish , to which the slip kangaroo is not a stranger !

Like the series, SHAUN THE SHEEP – the movie is devoid of any dialogue : any inventiveness is in the visual and sound universe, thanks to the sound effects (the voice actors are impayables !) and staging relevant, inventive and funny. But beware, this is not at all cooked, directors Richard Starzak and Mark Burton employ the inférant and the sub-heard with talent, for our greatest pleasure.

As for technique, what else to say if this is that SHAUN THE SHEEP focuses everything you love ! The film is the result of a painstaking work to be daunting. To Aardman, it is not only a cameraman, sculptor, set designer or costumer, it is also and above all a craftsman. The small skeletons of metal covered in plasticine, with an average size of 20 cm, are used for shooting frame by frame (12 frames per second). The former, therefore, away from computers, employees only to hide the wires holding the creatures in their movements in the air. Finally, no character looks like another one : the multitude of facial expressions gives them an accuracy and a singularity that would release all the creativity of the team of the film. And God knows if she is great ! Because it should be pointed out : even after 80 episodes and a multitude of gags and situations variety of preposterous figures, the studios have succeeded in SHAUN THE SHEEP to keep the spirit of burlesque of the series, without any redundancy.
