[critical] THE HOBBIT – THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

After the confrontation with Azog and the intervention of the Eagles, Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves continue their way to the city, dwarf of Erebor, to dislodge the dragon Smaug… Do not turn around the pot, and let’s say things clearly : with this second installment in the Hobbit trilogy, Peter Jackson has done things in a big way. In very, very big. Finished the slow pace of the first part, finished the too great camaraderie, finished the entry. THE HOBBIT – THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is a flat resistance as we had rarely tasted. Explanations.

One of the principal advantages of this second part is getting started. While we may all moan about the slow non-negligible portion of AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY with THE HOBBIT – THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG doesn’t waste time. A scene originating in the form of a flashback explains to us how and why Gandalf (Ian McKellen, the DA VINCI CODE) and Thorin (Richard Armitage, CAPTAIN AMERICA : THE FIRST AVENGER) came to ally. And it is gone ! We find Bilbo, the 13 Dwarves and Gandalf fleeing the Orcs, precisely (or almost) to where we had left them. As always, Peter Jackson has managed to recreate the universe of Tolkien and make it out to be the most faithful possible to the original work. While taking account of the leeway offered by the cinema. The story unfolds in a logical way, and a montage alterné allows you to follow all the intrigues of the small troop, without that one of them will be overlooked. At the level of the screenplay, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have done a great job. Everything is fluid and clear, it includes everything, without everything being explained. Perfect ! The story is a mix of adventure, humor and romance, sprinkled with a zest of psychology. Yes, THE HOBBIT is not a simple story of conquest, it is also a story of quest, who wants to be personal in many ways. As with the character of Thorin, who is much more dark than the first pane would let us believe.

The movie is to fantasy what AVATAR is to 3D : his greatest masterpiece !

If one focuses on the technical, there are things of praise to say. But in summary, the approach of perfection. Peter Jackson has mastered the technologies that he uses in the last 10 years and it shows. The universe he creates on the screen is hard to equal, it is necessary to recognise. The creatures put in the scene are sufficiently ugly and disgusting for many of us gasping in the light. Ames sensitive refrain. I’ll get you warned. The general plans, and all are breathtaking. With New Zealand, Peter Jackson has found the perfect place to recreate the work of Tolkien. Plains, hills, valleys, rivers, mountains, everything is there. Beyond the sumptuous landscapes, the action scenes are perhaps the highlight of this opus. Thanks to Orlando Bloom (KINGDOM OF HEAVEN) and Evangeline Lilly (REAL STEEL), who play the elves Legolas and Tauriel, the viewer, take full view and remain speechless for long seconds. Finally, even if this is not a requirement, note that the make-up and costumes feel good the hard work. Has the image of the ones used on Lee Pace (LINCOLN) alias Thranduil.

But after the flattery global, let’s talk about details that way. The first being the length. Peter Jackson knowing how to pleasure with the hardcore fans, the film is long enough to get a true slap in the face. But for the rest of the audience, those who forced the hand, those who are just curious or those who are attached to this little character hobbit camped by Martin Freeman (HOT FUZZ), for those, the film is a true journey. “Too long, too dramatic, too “developed” will they say certainly. And at the time of the cutting tome, one comes to wonder if this technique would not have taken its full meaning with this massive. Because when you see the final scene, one can only be stunned. Is this a joke ? Peter Jackson has he really done this ? How would such a director can indulge in a cliffhanger as big ? Answer : in order to better make us salivate until the last part, which will not come before a year. In the meantime, we are disappointment and bitterness. What’s more, the conversation between Bilbo and Smaug was not at all convinced. Of course, the dragon is interpreted by the more than charismatic Benedict Cumberbatch (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS). But a dragon that has stopped us harping on the power he really needed to talk as much to be scary ? No. We could also talk about the 3D which, if you think about it, brings nothing to the story. But we will refrain. Finally, we need to come back on the casting of liquid gold. Because up to now perfect, the special effects sin badly in this scene. The point to make us think of some bad tv movies aired on TNT. Atmosphere.

Led by a Martin Freeman more comical and endearing than anything, this album should mark the spirits. THE HOBBIT – THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is a hyperbola absolute. More violent, more complex, more funny but more importantly, dark. The movie is to fantasy what AVATAR is to 3D : his greatest masterpiece !
