Optimize your shooting with : The implementation

Last week we saw a “trick” or rather a document to facilitate your filming : the ” day to day “. Thanks to this document, your team and your actors are always in possession of good texts without be lugging a scenario bulky that weighs 3 tons. In short, thanks to the article from last week you have a part of the team that is happy and that, that has no price ! ;o) This week I’m going to continue to talk about filming and staging with a topic that I discussed in January : The implementation.

The what ?

The establishment ! Once again, a shoot that is preparing and there is a method to that it takes place without the addicted, or almost. There is a method that allows all the trades to know what one is doing…in short, a method that told everyone what will happen and to what objective everyone should reach. This is the method of implementation.

The implementation is an element to know and to apply as soon as it is needed.

The establishment what is it ?

I know what you think. You must say to yourself : “but the method I have it and I apply it. I prepared my film. I did a count, a plan of work, leaves of services…all the world needs to know what he has to do or not ?! “.

You are right in part. But this is not because your team knows that, on a day the day will begin with the sequence 4, that there will be such and such a comedian, need a steadicam and I pass that the team will really know what will happen.

The implementation will allow the entire team to see the actors evolve in the decor, see all the main actions which are going to be conducted to understand all the needs : the axis, how the chief operator must illuminate the scene, which is going to play or not in terms of decor and accessories, what part of the scene will be out-of-field to store the combo, the equipment, etc…

It is the 1er assistant who is at the origin of the implementation, especially at each change of sequence. The establishment of the first sequence of the day, before the time of readiness is the initiative of the first wizard, but often it is the producer who makes the request.

When do a implementation ?

This is the question that kills ! In a first step, it is necessary that you stick in the header that the implementation is not systematic. If your sequence is static, no need to put in place. But :

  • She plans the day before for the next day
  • The implementation is done in the beginning of the day for the first sequence and then for each change of sequence

Example : Your day begins at 9AM, PAT (Ready to run), you get ready, therefore, in general, an hour, that is to say, in our example, 8 AM. Your implementation will be, therefore, at…7: 45 ! On your sheet of service you convoquerez so the actors concerned by the first sequence at 7: 45 am on the board.

If your first sequence of the day is a field against a field of two characters sitting at a table…that there is no movement…not need to do any setting up with the actors…the two liners will do the trick.

Why, before the hour of preparation ?

Because the implementation should not take on the time of preparation of the light, camera, props (props), and especially of the HMC. It is done before these steps. Depending on the complexity of the scene it may take more or less time. In general 15 or 20 minutes.

The pitfalls of implementation

Then, an implementation is not a design time or set the scene. That is to say that she is not here to go into the emotion of the game, in the detail of the gestures…No, the implementation is just to see roughly how that will move the actors, what they will say in big, and what they will interact with…point bar ! This is just to see how the chief op will have to enlighten, where the boom operator will, by and large, have to put themselves etc…It is only there so that the team understands and sees what will happen.

It is not necessary to hang around and start to use the introduction to set the scene. If you are a wizard, you must let the director make its implementation because it is he who directs it, but you are the guarantor of the optimization time . Because if the implementation is spread out…you shift all the preparation that follows.

Note : Even if the director is the master on board, the first wizard, the pace of implementation. The director has always more or less need a framework (a structure) to make this implementation effective. You are the man (or woman) of the situation.

The implementation does not prevent to compare the cutting provided by the producer in the reality of space, movement, etc…We can see what works and what does not. The implementation can be a time of proposals of technical elements, but without hardware.

To be clear : the establishment IS NOT A REPEAT !

How well do a set up ?

It is very simple…

The day before

  • Put it on the map service
  • Consult with the director and the chief operator for the relevance or not provide an implementation
  • Announce to the team that he’s going to be a set-up. Some may be interested depending on the sequence to turn

On the same day

Are present for the implementation

  • The actors (necessary for the first sequence of the day)
  • The director
  • The first assistant
  • The head operator and cameraman (if the chief operator is not cameraman)
  • The script
  • The sound engineer
  • The boom operator
  • The gaffer

The progress of the implementation

All members of the team are there, on the shelf, at the time of the convening of the establishment. If I go back to my example, everyone must be there at 7: 45 AM. The actors also !!!

  • The actors are brought in directly on the shelf (not made-up, or costumes)
  • The ” day to day “ are distributed
  • The director, with the assistance of the wizard, directs the implementation

IMPORTANT for a good implementation

  • No technical equipment on the shelf (camera, boom etc…)
  • No figuration
  • The silence
  • Are these only the useful people
  • No work on the board while the upgrade is in place (appliances do not lead to projo, foot, not that of the decorator in the process of put the finishing touch to the decor etc.)

The implementation between two sequences

It is necessary to be vigilant once said : ” It is to change the sequence, the sequence thing “. Because the actors have a tendency to escape or are caught by the HMC in a hurry to make their connections, their change of costume or I don’t know what…the actor who wants to go in his room to take a nap or check his laptop…

The wizard must immediately initiate implementation of the following sequence in order for the team to know, once again, what is going to happen and prepare (to light, to accessorize, to mount a dolly set-up the camera with the right lens).

  • The actors should remain on the plateau
  • Indicate the number of the sequence (day to day)
  • Clear the board : this is to say that all the people who don’t need to be there out (figurative, visitors, lambda, team members etc…)
  • To make the silence

This implementation, like that of the morning, should not take too much time. Moreover, it must, depending on its complexity , of course, take less time than in the morning…10 minutes, at the most, it is sufficient often to see and work out the sequence.

Once again this is not a rehearsal !!!!
