We will enjoy to see lots of films of course, but also to give an overview of what is done in terms of short film. Because yes, the Cannes film Festival, this is not the official competition ! There are even, each year, a Palme d’or-Short Film. To be more exact, there are two spaces to give visibility to the short film during the Festival : The official competition of short films and the Short Film Corner.
The competition Short Film at the Cannes film Festival
While the jury of the competition queen will be chaired by Cate Blanchet, this is the French director Bertrand Bonello, which will be at the head of the jury of the Cinéfondation and short films.
The director commented on the appointment, role and expectations : ” What do we expect of the youth, filmmakers, unknown, of the first films ? They jostle each other, that they made us watch that we are not able to see it, they have the freedom, the edge, the recklessness and the daring that sometimes we no longer have. The Cinéfondation attaches from 20 years to hear these voices and I am extremely proud this year to be able to accompany them. “
As you can see from reading his comments, these are not necessarily the film’s most conventional who should take away the membership and to seduce the jury prize. The selection of short films in the official competition in 2018 will be unveiled in mid-April. Registration procedure for Short in competition
The criteria to apply are the following :
- have been made during the twelve months preceding the Cannes film Festival
- not to have been exploited elsewhere than in their country of origin
- they have not been presented in any other manifestation film international
- not have been released on the Internet
- be of a duration of less than 15 minutes, generic included.

The Short Film Corner of the Cannes film Festival
The “pitch” Short Film Corner” is the following : “Organized each year by the Festival de Cannes, the Short Film Corner is the essential rendez-vous around the short film. Since 2004, producers and directors of short film, choose the Short Film Corner to present their films, realise meetings and initiate actions that are decisive for their future careers.
The Short Film Corner, presents films from all the countries, for the most part unpublished, as well as the short films presented in the Official Competition, the Cinéfondation, the director’s Fortnight and the Week of the Critics.”
On paper, this promises great opportunities for filmmakers and producers to beginners. In concrete terms, this consists of many workshops and conferences each day and the opportunity to show his film to many professionals via the library’s digital festival and the catalogue du court. In 2017, the Short Film Corner had referenced 559 film school, 736 first films for a total of 1869 movies listed and more than 11000 viewing in the video library.
Registration Conditions for the Short Film Corner in 2018
The criteria to apply are the following :
- The film must have been produced after June 1, 2017
- The duration of the film must not exceed 35 minutes
- The film must not have been published on the Internet
- Only one film per producer will be accepted
- The film must not have been registered at the Short Film Corner in a past edition
- The films must be sent in original version with English subtitles or in English.
As for the competition, the registration deadline for the 1st of march is gone for this year.
