THE PAN’S LABYRINTH

On Syfy at 20.45

The Pan’s Labyrinth (El Laberinto del fauno) is a film hispano-mexican Guillermo del Toro, released in 2006. It takes place a little after the Spanish civil war and its main character, the young Ofelia, is designated by a fauna as the princess of an underground world. She must pass three tests to win it back while his mother, pregnant, is seriously ill and that her stepfather, the cruel captain Vidal, hunts down the guerrilla anti-francoist of the region.

The story is a parable inspired by the fairy tales in which del Toro explores themes that he had already evoked in The Spine of the Devil (2001). Translations into French and English of the film’s title references the god Pan, but del Toro has specified that these translations were inaccurate and that the fauna of the film had nothing to do with Pan1. Shot in the Sierra de Guadarrama in 2005, the film was presented for the first time at the 2006 Cannes film festival and has been at its output very well received by the public and the critics. He has won numerous awards, including three Oscars for the film and won a Hugo Award for best film.
