• Sigourney Weaver was the first choice of Scott for the role of queen Isabella of Castile. However, it was in the middle of filming of Alien, when she was approached, and it took more time than expected. It is Anjelica Huston who was contacted. Finally, Weaver has declared to be available at the last minute.

Technical data sheet

Original title : Heaven’s Gate

Screenplay : Michael Cimino

Main actors : Kris Kristofferson, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Walken, Jeff Bridges, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, Brad Dourif, Joseph Cotten, Richard Masur, David Mansfield, Terry O Quinn, Geoffrey Lewis, Mickey Rourke, Willem Dafoe

Country of origin : United States

Genre : Western

Released : 22 may 1981

Duration : 216 minutes (director’s cut version restored in 2012)

Differences between the versions

• A mount at the other, Cimino was chosen for the director’s cut version of 2012 to tell the story completely linear, and view only from the point of view of the characters. Suddenly, there is more to voice-over a narrator or more there is no turning back. Thus, the third party (Newport), in which intertwined the look of Averill on his boat with his memories of the killings final of 1890 at the end of which Ella was the death, takes place, in the 2012 version, strictly on the yacht.

This is an opportunity to introduce a female character, lying in the cabin lounge, and find the last time the black and white photo of a young couple, photo, absent from the old version and that, in the timeline of 2012, is back as a “red thread” throughout the episode, 1890. However, nothing is said about this picture ; the couple is not identified nor identifiable, even if we can assume that it is Averill with his girlfriend view at Harvard.

Moreover, at no time, is clearly explained why the Averill finds himself marshal in Wyoming. At the beginning of the second episode, we know that it is to convey a prisoner to the federal prison. On the other hand it is not known how long he has been assigned in the county of Johnson, nor for what reason he would have left a more lucrative (a reply brings up the fact that he means well above those of the emigrants who constitute the bulk of the population, and we know — episode common to both versions — on his return to Casper, he has been expelled from the club known to be frequented by large landowners). Situation consistent with his education level and social class, and that attests to the yacht on which it is found in 1903 (but is it his yacht or his wife ?).

• Harvard, 1870

In the 2012 version, the speech of Billy Irvine, who plays his impairment, and ” remarks on the education of Harvard, is given in its entirety.

• Newport, Rhode Island, 1903

This last part is no longer mounted, with back on murder, by Frank Canton and his mercenaries, survivors, Ella Watson and John Bridges. The entire sequence takes place on the yacht. In the lounge of the boat, where burns a fire in the fireplace, we discover on a chaise, a middle-aged woman lying down, at the same time that we look at the black and white photo in the silver frame. This woman is obviously a friend of Averill that we have seen at Harvard in 1870. In an attitude of frozen, she asks him for a cigarette, pronouncing the last words of the film. In silence, Averill runs and lights the cigarette.

Anecdote

Dismal failure upon its release (it is responsible for the bankruptcy of United Artists), the film now enjoys a considerable reputation with moviegoers and critics, some even considering it as” one of the seven wonders of the world of the cinema “.
