Cardiac means related to the heart. PYP stands for pyrophosphate. A cardiac PYP scan uses a radioactive form of PYP called Tc99m-PYP. Why is the scan done? This scan can be used to find out if you have a rare disease called cardiac amyloidosis (am-uh-loi-DO-sis).
How long does a PYP scan take?
The test will take about an hour and a half but can last up to 2 hours. During COVID-19 we must limit guests in our office and have limited waiting space during the test. It is preferred that you do not bring a guest unless medically necessary for support or translation assistance for this reason.
How serious is cardiac amyloidosis?
Patients who have the AL type of amyloid affecting the heart do have the worst prognosis, and in fact, for those patients, if they start to get heart failure symptoms, severe shortness of breath and fluid building up, a person generally will deteriorate quite rapidly unless they receive effective treatment.
