What is Sharks Cove known for?
Sharks Cove is a popular Oahu attraction in the North Shore for its amazing snorkeling experience. Not far from Haleiwa Town, and around the corner from Waimea Bay, is this unique, reef-protected Oahu beach cove that got its name from its shape which keenly resembles that of a shark.
Why is it called Sharks Cove in Hawaii?
This cove got its name from a popular story that says that the outline of a reef outside the cove looks like a shark when seen from above. Shark’s Cove is a lava-rock beach on the North Shore of Oahu and is part of Pupukea Beach Park. Harmless white-tipped reef sharks may also be spotted just outside the cove.
Is Sharks Cove safe to snorkel?
Sharks Cove is a large set of tide pools located at Pupukea Beach Park on the North Shore of O’ahu. Largely protected by a natural breakwater, the pools are vast and calm and great for snorkeling. Many people are intimidated to enter the ocean while visiting the North Shore, and it is dangerous.
When should I go to Sharks Cove?
October through April is considered Hawaii’s surf season, with waves peaking between December and February, so the summer months are the best time to snorkel Sharks Cove. If there are waves forecasted, the current could be strong, so please choose one of my other favorite Oahu snorkeling beaches to be safe.
Do I need water shoes for Sharks Cove?
The cove is surrounded by jagged volcanic rock, so sandals or water shoes are recommended. Winter months are not recommended for diving due to large waves.
Where do you enter Sharks Cove?
LOCATION & GETTING THERE. Sharks Cove is located on Oahu’s North Shore and is approximately 40 miles (around an hours drive) from Honolulu. The cove is located just after the Foodland grocery store, and you will find parking spaces for Sharks Cove located just before and after the cove.
Do you have to pay to go to Sharks Cove?
If you can’t get reservations to Hanauma Bay, Shark’s Cove is the next best place to snorkel on Oahu. The parking is free and the beach is free.
