What is Bettys famous for?
A tearoom that has become a Yorkshire institution is celebrating its 100th birthday. Bettys opened its doors in Harrogate in the aftermath of the World War One and has been serving tea and cakes ever since. A century on, the firm now boasts six cafes around the county.
Does Bettys serve alcohol?
Freshly ground coffee served with hot milk or cream. Soya or oat milk is available on request. Served in a cafetière for one with hot milk or cream. Alcoholic drinks may be served only in licensing hours to customers over 18 taking a meal.
Are dogs allowed in Bettys?
Regrettably we are unable to allow dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) into our Bettys café tearooms.
Is Bettys at York closing?
In spring 2021 we made the difficult decision to close the first-floor café at our Little Bettys branch in York while keeping the ground floor shop open. Many visited Little Bettys regularly for years, sometimes decades, and we know that lots of memories were bound up in this beloved place.
Does Bettys tea rooms do gluten free?
We do offer a menu for gluten intolerant diets which you can view our menu page. Our staff in the Tea Rooms are happy to advise how other dishes on our main menus can be tailored for any special dietary requirements. Consequently, we cannot guarantee a total absence of wheat or gluten.

Fat rascals are best served warm from the oven but they can be frozen and reheated in a low oven. You can serve them alone or with plenty of butter and they’re also gorgeous for brunch served with vanilla-scented Mascarpone.

Actually, they are a cross between a bun and a scone, and Betty’s Fat Rascals differ from some other recipes, as they have whole blanched almonds and glace cherries on top! The origin of the name is unknown, but they are thought to have been made since the mid 19th Century – under the name of Fat Rascals!
Do you have to book at Bettys?
You can simply pop along on the day, because our Café Tea Rooms traditionally don’t take reservations. However, we now also offer pre-booking at our two biggest branches, served upstairs in the Imperial Room at Bettys Harrogate and Belmont Room at Bettys York.
