Can you self-study Genki?
Hence, beginners can use Genki for self-study. Regardless of the language you are learning, your study must cover 4 basic language skills – reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It should be noted that the book itself covers reading, speaking, and writing. A free CD comes with the book for listening comprehension.

Are Genki textbooks worth it?
Genki is a great value for a one-off price. You do have to tack on a little bit for the work book (which I think is ABSOLUTELY necessary should you study with this series). It falls slightly higher on the price range as far as texbooks go. But you pay once and benefit many times over.
How long does it take to finish Genki 1 and 2?
According to Genki’s publisher, completing Genki I & II requires about 300 hours of study. It also mentions they cover about 1,700 vocabulary words and covers 317 kanji characters.
Does Genki teach kanji?
Yes! Genki I will teach you some of the basic kanji to get you started. After finishing Genki I and II, you’ll have a great basis for continuing Japanese learning on your own. I learned kanji both with JLPT prep books, and the book called Remembering the Kanji I by James Heisig.
