During the Ancient Egyptian era, Elephantine Island was utilized as a trading route and as a strategic defensive position against enemy forces.
The Elephantine Island can be reached by felucca from the shores of Aswan. We visited the Aswan Museum which is housed in a modern concrete building with lots of interesting ancient artifacts on display. We also had a quick look at one of the oldest Nilometers in Egypt before continuing our boat ride to Kitchener Island.
