The odyssey still a Polish family through four decades until its total disappearance. The memories compiled Zdzisław Beksiński, surrealist painter, a subscriber to the genre post-apocalyptic, including periods of happiness, various disorders but especially in depression and urges of suicide.
The story of a son
It all starts with the son, Tomazs Beksiński, interpreted by the talented actor Dawid Ogrodnik. He is the main character of the film (her father being too busy to think of his experiments). Due to lack of space, the paintings of the apocalypse dominate his apartment. He sees it, both outside and inside of his thoughts. They will be well offered to a buyer in one day but will never leave in the end never the premises, available for ever in the contemplation of this sick mind. The vision minimalist given by the camera, testifies : on the walls, the shade of paints depressed, and the center of the room, the discomfort of the young man. The collapse intimate of the son will produce a prophetic dimension : the end is near.
While in the 1960s, it is still a young man struggling to find his place in society, at the dawn of the new millennium, it will have accumulated thousands of vinyl records, action movies, books (all from the West) who have been through so many loopholes to his own disillusionment. For evidence, when he learns bad news, he feels the need instant to consume a hollywood blockbuster.
But oddly, the film never falls into self-flagellation redemptive and moral, and Tomasz, on the contrary, is proof of humor, lightness and self-deprecating. The anticipation of death is hard and it puts up with, with a smile. The life in a box of cassettes
One of the most beautiful scenes of the film is shot on camcorder led by the father (which dedicates a cult to the object since he received it at Christmas and it never left). We see Tomazs confess to his parents, in a fixed plane. A scene of nearly ten minutes summarizing as ever, the machinery of emotions leading to suicide. Self-loathing, inconstancy, regret of the past, the integral is swept away.
This monologue briefly interrupted by questions of the mother (example : but you were happy, small, huh ?) reveals in hollow a formidable mastery of his subject. It also includes the essence of the malaise of the son that the key to the cinema of Matuszynski : learn to deal with morbid without condemning him. Far from being a misanthrope or “punitive” in any respect, the director of The Last Family we want as well. The family has a nice crumble little by little, each death is a source of learning.
Subsequently, the idea of plan VHS will be reused between two funerals to capture the souls winging of the bar building or the change of look, such an outside perspective of the life of the family. It is thanks to these videos the painter’s real that Jan P. Matuszynski has found the material for the film. Zdzisław Beksiński will be filming until the end of his life, looking beyond its paint already dead to keep a trace of the living.
