Harsh Satire of a middle class provincial the hypocrisy of the facade is dismantled (and exploited) by a chambermaid, intelligent and subversive. The choice of a black-and-white austere and the lack of music results in a portrait of cold and almost clinical, but nevertheless enjoyable, the mores of the bourgeoisie of the 1930’s. The great Buñuel, and an interpretation of Jeanne Moreau justly rewarded by the prize of best actress at the international film Festival of Karlovy Vary.

Synopsis
Largely autobiographical, the film is about the difficult childhood of Antoine Doinel, his relationships with his parents, petty theft, which earned him to be locked up in a centre for juvenile offenders.
At the end of the 1950s, Antoine Doinel, 12 years old, lives in Paris between a mother little loving and a father-in-law futile. It plagiarizes the end of the Search for The absolute in a composition of French. The professor assigns a grade of zero to the dismay of Antoine, who, in fact, remembered involuntarily the passage he had read recently.
Antoine Doinel is having a admiration fervent to Honoré de Balzac. He dedicated an altar, a candle illuminates a portrait of the writer and sets fire to a curtain, causing the wrath of his father-in-law. In addition, battered by a French teacher who is authoritarian and unfair, it goes on, with his friend, René, from skipping school to lie. Then this is the fugue, the theft of a typewriter and the office. His parents, not wanting more of him, confide to the” Educational supervision “. A judge of the children placed in an observation Centre where he is deprived even of the visit of his friend René. Enjoying a soccer game, Antoine escapes. Pursued, he runs through the countryside up to the sea.
The spiral in which the young Antoine sinks is described with sensitivity, but also with firmness. It is made all the more touching as the film shows in parallel the constant good will of awkward the hero. The audience identifies itself easily to Antoine Doinel, with which Jean-Pierre Léaud, actor beginner seems to get confused totally. The emotional distress and the leak in front of the teenager are of all ages.
