Bonded batting has a light adhesive on both sides to hold fibers together. This helps so the batting won’t shift or beard. Bearding is when batting fibers push through the fabric. Fusible batting contains a fusible web so you can baste layers together.

Thermal bonded batting is manufactured using a heat process to bond fibers together without the use of acrylic resin. These products are non allergenic and will not support the growth of mold or mildew. They can be laundered or dry cleaned with no shrinkage.
What is the difference between wadding and batting?
Wadding and batting are the same thing – the only real difference is regional language difference. The term wadding is more widely used in the UK while it’s more-often called batting in the US.
What does fiber batting mean?
Natural fiber battings are breathable, making them different than synthetic fibers such as polyester. Natural fiber battings are also not sensitive to heat and are less flammable. Having the ability to absorb moisture, cotton battings give cooling comfort in the summer while affording natural warmth during the winter.
Can you quilt with polyester batting?
Polyester – Pros: Less expensive, lightweight but very durable. The Low Loft options are better for hand-quilting, doesn’t need to be quilted as closely together. The Highest Loft polyester batting is good for a thicker quilt – probably easiest to tie.
Can you use flannel as a batting?
I just used flannel as the batting for the quilt I recently posted. I LOVE how it turned out. It’s light but drapey. I bought 100% cotton white flannel and washed it prior to quilting and it did shrink quite a bit on that first washing, so buy at least 1/3 more than you need.
