“Dix years after the events of the first film, a group of humans who survived the virus monkey lives in what remains of San Francisco whereas, in the nearby forest, the monkeys are grouped together in an organized community led by Caesar.” Logical continuation of THE PLANET OF the APES : ORIGINS, the new film by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) has everything, absolutely everything, from big entertainment to the u.s., packed full of special effects and certainly a manichean. Explanations.
As in the prequel came out 3 years ago, THE PLANET OF the APES : The CONFRONTATION shows, more than clear, the difficulties that the two peoples (humans and monkeys) have to cohabit. At the beginning of the film, the monkeys think that all the men are dead due to the virus ALZ-113 (invented by humans and tested on the monkeys). But it is clear that a group of survivors is still standing in San Francisco. The city allows here to make the link between the two films and to anchor the latter in the continuity of the first. Thing that the writers are going to attempt to do, throughout the 130 minutes that make up the movie. With a little awkwardness, it is necessary to recognise. To begin with, the absence/presence of James Franco. Real star of the first film, his ghost haunts us here. Figure of the man well-meaning in a society that promotes the profits, the writers have apparently decided to make a spiritual father to Malcolm, the main character of this suite. Accustomed to big productions (Zero Dark Thirty, the great Gatsby, White House Down, etc), Jason Clarke performer with a lot of evil with a “hero” as exciting and interesting as could be Will Rodman (a. k. a. James Franco).
Even wanting not to compare the two films, the operation proves to be difficult as a result feels the bad copy. Bad habit that major studios have made, the casting seems to have here been expanded to fill the obvious lack of originality in the writing. Because yes, the scenario with the fake accents shakespearean of THE PLANET OF the APES : The CONFRONTATION is not worth anything, or very little. If the bad jokes we are saved, we are – once again – with a story in which opposes the two clans where not everything is good or bad. Where some are nice when others are clearly bad guys. Where the bad intentions of some are to counteract the good will of the other. And more importantly, the script insists on the binding character of a struggle between humans and monkeys. A struggle that, as you can imagine, can’t be resolved in a single film, and will lead necessarily to a suite. Also, it would be already scheduled for 2016. So, to compensate for the absence of James Franco (asHarvey Milk, 127 Hours) and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, You will meet a handsome and dark stranger), the producers have hired Gary Oldman (saga Harry Potter, trilogy The Dark Knight), Keri Russell (Mission impossible 3, The American), Kirk Acevedo (New York 911, Fringe) and Enrique Murciano (FBI : missing, NCIS : special Investigations). The sauce takes. Difficult, but it takes.
”The result of a very good film, before being a good movie in and of itself.”
Despite all this, THE PLANET OF the APES : The CONFRONTATION has a strong argument. The presence ofAndy Serkis. Already at work in the trilogy of The Lord of the rings, then The Hobbit, passing by King Kong and The Adventures of Tintin, the british actor, 50 years of age offers a performance that is absolutely amazing. As always. Nobody would have been able to incarnate Caesar as well as him and it is a fact that deserves to be noted. In addition, the photography of the film is not bad at all. Far from it. The nature and the urban city is blended perfectly. All aided by a mise-en-scene rather remarkable. The film is well cut, well mounted, and the battle scenes are worth the detour. What more can one ask of a film with a budgets of $ 120 million, if they had not been a more considerable work on the writing and the music almost non-existent. Or at least, little difference.
If THE PLANET OF the APES : The CONFRONTATION attracts, pleases and entertains, it is finally because it is the result of a very good film, a good film in itself. If it has, nevertheless, undeniable qualities, we cannot override its flaws that make it a blockbuster of the summer. No more.
