Cleopatra made a bet to build a palace in record time, in order to show Caesar the greatness of the egyptian people. The architect Numérobis is in charge of the work : he has three months to build a magnificent temple, or it will be delivered to the crocodiles. It uses Panoramix the druid, who arrives in Egypt to lend a hand with his magic potion, accompanied by Asterix and Obelix. But things are looking complicated. First of all, because Numérobis is objectively a bad architect, whose homes are falling apart all alone. Then because a lot of people have interest to see it fail…
Our heroes are first and foremost a matter to Amonbofis, architect, a rival of Numérobis, which works to conspire against him, and the Gauls with the assistance of his sidekick Screwdriver. The two co-conspirators are trying to first wall living Numérobis and the Gauls into a pyramid, but Idéfix allows prisoners to find the exit. Amonbofis then has the idea to offer Cleopatra a cake poisoned by the hand of the Gauls, who are accused of unfairly when the food taster for the queen falls ill after having tasted the pudding. Panoramix healed the taster and it will get better. Amonbofis then tries to cut off the supply of the construction site by construction materials and then cause a strike among the workers.
Finally, Numérobis and the Gauls must do in the face of Caesar himself, determined to not let Cleopatra won her bet. The legions lay siege to the building site and begin to destroy the temple. But the Gauls manage to prevent Cleopatra with a message carried by Idéfix. The queen arrives in great pomp and is furious to surprise Caesar in flagrante delicto of cheating. The latter must bow, and the temple is soon to be finished in time, and then inaugurated with a great feast.
