Synopsis
The film explores different elements famous from the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and the struggle for indian independence. Thus, we are witnessing the fight for civil rights in South Africa at the beginning of the century, to the establishment of the Sabarmati Ashram, to the massacre of Amristar and the civil disobedience movement which followed it, to the salt march, to the death of his wife during his captivity, to the independence and partition of India, and finally to his assassination on 30 January 1948.
Anecdotes
• 300 000 extras were hired for the scene of the funeral. 200 000 of them were volunteers and 94 560 have obtained a small sum of money. The sequence was filmed on January 31, 1981, the day after the 33rd anniversary of the death of Gandhi.
• Alec Guinness and Anthony Hopkins were considered for the title role. Similarly, John Hurt and Tom Courtenay have been approached to play the same role.
• Ben Kingsley, whose real name is Krishna Bhanji, is originally by her father in the indian State of Gujarat in which one is born also by Mahatma Gandhi.
• The scene where Trevor Howard appeared in the role of judge Broomfield was completed in two days.
• Dustin Hoffman was interested in playing the role of Gandhi but he was finally offered the lead role in the film Tootsie.
• The scene of the assassination of Gandhi was shot at Birla House in New Delhi, the same place where took place the murder.
• The filming took place from November 26, 1980 to 10 may 1981.

Synopsis
