The latter fled to the indian territory choctaw with a band of outlaws led by “Lucky” Ned Pepper. Since justice does not seem to worry about it, Mattie decides to find it to engage the Marshal of the toughest in the region, Rooster l. cogburn.

L. cogburn decides to go alone on the trail of the fugitives, but Mattie insists on doing part of the trip. They are joined by LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger who is in pursuit of Tom Chaney for several months for the murder of a senator that he has committed to Texas. The three companions face during this long hunt, in the nature of the difficulties to agree and LaBoeuf leaves after a dispute with l. cogburn. L. cogburn mounts an ambush near a hut where the gang of Pepper must come to a halt but it is LaBoeuf who shows first. The gang of Pepper arrives just after and LaBoeuf is captured, but l. cogburn kills two members of the gang and the other take a leak. LaBoeuf, accidentally wounded by l. cogburn in the course of the shooting, was again on his side after a new quarrel.

The next day, Mattie encounters Chaney by chance and the hurt of a blow from a revolver. But the weapon fizzled out when she wants to complete Chaney, who removes it and take it to the Pepper. This requires l. cogburn to renounce to follow them by threatening to kill Mattie, and then leaves Chaney alone with her while he and his men will be looking for horses. Chaney tries to kill Mattie, but he is knocked out by LaBoeuf, who returned on hearing the shots and developed a plan with l. cogburn. He only Pepper and his three men, killing two and seriously injuring Pepper before his horse is shot down. Pepper is about to complete l. cogburn, but LaBoeuf, killing at long range with his rifle. Chaney, returned to him, takes the opportunity to knock out LaBoeuf to turn but Mattie kills him with a blow of rifle. The recoil of the weapon causes it to fall in a pit and is bitten on the hand by a snake. L. cogburn rides day and night to take him to a doctor before the venom kills her and gets there just in time.

Twenty-five years later, Mattie, who has been an amputee of the arm following the bite of the serpent, receives a letter from l. cogburn, now very old, and that is part of a Wild West Show. L. cogburn wrote to him that he would like the review but, when Mattie arrives, l. cogburn is dead for a bit. It brings back the body of l. cogburn to be buried in his property, all the while wondering what has become of LaBoeuf, that she was never to be seen no more, and meditating on the time which escapes us.

Anecdotes

• The same false connection is visible in the True Grit from 1969 with John Wayne (100 dollars for a sheriff), directed by Henry Hathaway, and in one of the Coen brothers. Mattie Ross crosses the river with his horse, out she walks to l. cogburn and Labeef (or Laboeuf). After a few seconds, it is all dry. The Coen brothers would have made a reference to the first True Grit.

• This is the first film of Coen to be rated PG-13 (no one under 13 years of age) in the United States since Intolerable Cruelty in 2003.

• This is the second time that the Coen brothers direct Jeff Bridges after The Big Lebowski came out in 1998. He takes up the role of Marshal l. cogburn, which won the best actor Oscar to John Wayne.

• Josh Brolin again collaborates with the Coen brothers after No Country for Old Men (2007). He is the embodiment of Tom Chaney, formerly played by Jeff Corey.

• A large series of hearings has been conducted in Texas to find the young main actress. Hailee Steinfeld was chosen from among nearly 15 000 hopefuls. In an interview given to the New York Times, Ethan Coen says, ” It was, and you can probably imagine, the source of much anxiety. […] We knew that if we found it not, there would be no movie. “
