[CRITICAL] GOOD APPLES

Good Apple, the latest feature film by Florence Quentin, offers a moment of reunion between two monstres sacrés of French cinema : Deneuve and Depardieu.

GOOD APPLE has been presented in avant-première au Festival du Film Francophone d’angoulême. During the press conference, director Florence Quentin (known for his work of co-screenwriter of the films of Etienne Chatiliez) and the two actors Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu, have tried to communicate the pleasure that they have had to shoot the film. The director had “wanted to make a film about the tenderness, which is different from the violence that emanates from the films of today, as a moment of breathing”. It has specially co-written with his son Alexis Quentin a comedy that brings together the two actors for the tenth time on the big screen.

But the fact of the have in mind of the cast enough to make a good comedy ? There is no doubt that GOOD APPLE will find its audience, even if it will be with a feeling of déjà-vu, and perhaps boredom. The choice of first names is already an index, since the director, “of which the pen has not trembled in the face of the two holy monsters“, has used the characters that they have already interpreted. As for Barbara, she is inspired by the roles freakish of Catherine Deneuve in La sirène du Mississippi or The Wild, in which she appeared as a beautiful woman who is free, full of energy, with a large grain of madness. He makes service to this woman that bad faith is absolute, which leads everyone by the nose. Capricious, mythomaniac, mysterious, held eccentric, it is bar as soon as it is confronted with a situation that she can’t control. The theme of the fugue of these characters séxagénaires is also very present in a GOOD APPLE, just like it was in there She goes (with Catherine Deneuve), or Saint-Amour (with Gérard Depardieu).

Gérard himself, faced with the deportation of his wife and to his daily routine, takes advantage of a large sum of money to leave everything. It is a simple man, generous and tolerant. Despite the love of his mother-in-law (what a funny idea to choose the sassy Chantal Ladesou who is the same age as the actor) and his son-in-law, Gerard is tired of being taken for an apple. The encounter power between Gerard and Barbara takes place in a very small village that seems to live from tourism, English. The mayor (Guillaume de Tonquédec) and the mechanic Rico (Grégoire Ludig) adopt very quickly the nice (Gérard).

Apart from the best scenes revolve around the character of the Madame Sans-Gêne, a true object of fascination, and highlight an ever-stunning Catherine Deneuve, there is not much more to say about the movie, alas. In summary, GOOD APPLE, it is a bit like watching old distant cousins that we had not seen for a long time: we spend a pleasant evening in their company, it recalls good memories, but it is impossible to remember the next day what it was specifically talked about.
