cutting technique : tips and examples

Short guide to practical advice and examples around the cutting technique, an essential step before beginning any project.

We studied there is little note of intent, but today it is another very important document, and quite a few mastered by the neophytes that we are going to study today. This is not the most famous of all, but it is without doubt one of the most useful and important – but after all, what kind of document is not important ? – we speak of course of the slicing technique.

What is the cutting technique :

Cutting what ? As its name indicates, it’s going to be a technical document, and exclusively technical. You will find on this last all the indications of planes, axes, movements of camera, and sometimes even acoustic, all for each scene. It is added to the scenario, that has no intended technical, and the two will give the vision of the film. You can see it a bit like a music score before it is played, because unlike the story-board that comes after a cutting technique, it is very cold.

The cutting technique is going to be made by the director after reading the script. It results in this way his vision of it, and how they imagine the set images. This will allow to define itself clearly what he wants, but above all to indicate it to the technical team in order to prepare the shooting day after day, scene after scene. This represents a very large part of the job of director. So if the scenario tells the story of a way of drama, the slicing technique will be to do it in a cinematic way.

Especially, a good cutting technique, well-organized, will allow often to save time, and therefore money. As the adage “time is money” is especially true when shooting a film. If the latter is poorly organized, it will take more time and cost more expensive. This will therefore also help determine the ambitions of the director, who will then put his desires in parallel to its means, and to clarify and order ideas of the latter, he would sometimes abandon a few ideas that are too complicated and expensive.

For who, for what ?

In general, the cutting technique is, once it is completed, for the first assistant director, second director. It manages the good organization of the production and management teams. Basically, if there is a problem, it’s going to be his fault.

To arrange this, it will therefore have a great need for the cutting technique, in order to make the best of the planning to the realization and built up his plan of filming.

Nevertheless, a splitting technique may also be useful for a production manager that will be used to estimate the costs of the filming, or the director of photography, in which these information can help to better prepare for, or even the editor who can sometimes resort to this document (even though his role is to bring a sort of third vision of history, and of the knowledge of the cutting technique can restrain this.).

You will therefore understand, it is a document of central importance and significance multiple for a lot of people. You have all in mind, it is futile, therefore, to do the cutting, or you will notify the on-site ? Never do it, this will not be good neither for you, nor for your team, or for your project. Even for the realization of clips, the cutting technique can be used !

However, there are filmmakers who are more suitable than others. If Kubrick or Hitchcock were renowned to be very careful, difficult to imagine, for example, Taika Waititi and the Dardenne brothers to bend exactly to the rigors of a cutting technique.

Now let’s see how a cutting technique brought about and built !
