Anecdotes

• The film shows part of the frame and the motivation of a character And for a few dollars more : a story of revenge, which unfolds in the course of the film, through flash-back. The flash-back are related to music, and the cause of the revenge will be fully revealed during the final duel. But, instead of a revenge arising out of a relationship, brother-sister, related to the music of a watch, this time, vengeance is the result of a link brother-in-law, and it is related to music of the harmonica.

• After the Good, the bad and the Ugly, Leone wanted to make western and had started to prepare the filming of’ It was a time in America. It is in the United States, where he wanted to start producing, that it was suggested he do another western. It was then that he had the idea to do the trilogy It once was….

• This movie, the first part of the trilogy There was a time…, allows Leone to revisit the myth of the american West, and, in the name of a greater concern for realism, make him a truth, altered by the conventions of american cinema. Leone was always amazed, among other reproaches which he addressed to the western classics, that you do not show, for example, the reality of the impact of a ball which was a huge hole in the body of the victim. Or even, that it attenuates the extreme violence of this era that saw yet a killer show cropped ears of his enemies to compel compliance (see William Quantrill). It is, however, in a final circle, the arena of life, Leone brings together and encloses his characters, the essential, and expresses the moment of truth of the film concludes, the most classic, by the duel which is an inherent part of western.

• The themes of the film and it is a constant for Leone, are also magnified by a staging erudite and always spectacular illustrated with a musical accompaniment and expressive. We can discuss the beginning of the film, became legendary, with the three killers waiting for the train and its close-ups on eyes, crackling, finger, fly around Jack Elam, the drops of water falling on the cap or the wheel creaking in the wind. If we except the few words spoken by the chief of station in the first minute of the film (but who does not get a response), the first words are exchanged that 11 minutes after the beginning of the film, which makes it one of the longest scenes of silent cinema. This sequence is also the most long generic in the history of cinema.

• The film multiplies the learned framing and installs in the space the characters in a way often strikingly : frequent dives or against dives, camera placed under a different angle lying, for example, the shapes or filling the screen of eyes presented in very large plans. The fights are filmed in two times as many ballets : first, a slow rise to the expectation that increases the voltage prior to the exasperation of the nerves explodes in gunfire.

• This movie became a cult which insists on the passage between two eras, and whose tone of disenchantment, will be translated into “It was once the Revolution” announcement by the double theme of the duo and the disillusionment It was a time in America. The three films, without being sequels, however, are to be seen in chronological order.

• This is the first film of a trilogy that includes then It was once the revolution and It was a time in America.

• Anachronism : during the preparation of the marriage feast, the daughter of McBain sings a few lines of Danny Boy, a song written in 1910.

• The arrival of Jill, the dial of the clock of the station is shown at two times : visibly in a plan it is new, in another it is damaged.

• When Harmonica meets Jill in the ranch McBain, he has a slash on the left cheek-bone. The next day when he goes to meet Frank, his cheekbone is intact.

• In the scene of the hanging, Frank puts a harmonica crushed on the slice in the mouth of the Harmonica. In the following plans on the same harmonica is intact, to appear again crushed (by the teeth that clutched) at the time where the Harmonica fell to the ground.

• The Americans have not really liked the movie, but ranked 20th best films of all time according to IMDB : no major award, not even nominated for Oscars, including for music. This can be explained by the fact that the film was cut a number of scenes during its export to the United States, including that of the hostel and the death of Cheyenne.
