They make him discover that the world he lives in is a virtual world in which human beings are kept under control.

Morpheus, the captain of the Nébuchadnézzar, contacts Neo and think that it is the Elected official who can release the human beings from the yoke of machines and take control of the matrix (according to his beliefs and his convictions).

Anecdotes

This film was regarded by the general public as a true revolution. On the aesthetic level, his extensive use of a technique of filming (previously existing but little-used) : the bullet time, the effect of the “mobile camera” (a series of cameras arranged in a circle) around a subject in a slow motion movement, has wowed the spectators. This technique, invented by Emmanuel Carlier in 1995, was used by Michel Gondry in an advertisement for Smirnoff in 1997, the first use in film was, without doubt, in Lost in space (Lost in Space) Stephen Hopkins (1998). Many graphics were taken from Ghost in the Shell Mamoru Oshii, especially the generic.

On the merits, however, none of the elements, taken separately, is itself revolutionary. The way of filming is very inspired by the cinema of Hong Kong and John Woo, the themes are classic cyberpunk, with elements of Tron (Steven Lisberger, 1982, the name of Mr. Anderson being the name of a programmer in the history of Tron) and the Terminator (James Cameron, 1984) for the central theme (the machines dominating the world in the future).
