Adapted from a novel of the same name by British Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man depicts the portrait of George Falconer, a university professor of middle age, whose companion died in a car accident. Eight months later, “to wake up every morning is a pain” to George, who loses the will to live, despite the comfort brought by his old friend Charley, she is also plagued by loneliness. Anecdotes

• The film is a longtime project of Guillermo del Toro. The scenario is supplemented by that of two Spanish critics, Antonio Trashorras and David Muñoz. The film is partly financed and produced by Pedro Almodóvar and his brother Agustín, through their company El Deseo.

• For the scenario of the film, Guillermo del Toro is inspired by the literature of the gothic, anglo-saxon, with authors such as M. R. James, Sheridan Le Fanu and Arthur Machen. He admits to being inspired by films such as Operation fear, ” especially for its scenery “), goodbye children, Los Olvidados, or the Night of The hunter. He also mentions the legend of the ghost of Santi in the mexican city of Chapala : a woman who had drowned in a lake came back to a phantom and carried the people who came on the water.
